Virtual Hooked on Books Zoom Discussion, 1PM -- CANCELED
About this event
A mesmerizing podcast and review led TVIH member Ruth Alice White
to our October 6th Hooked on Books memoir selection:
Daniel Mendelsohn’s An Odyssey: A Father, A Son, and An Epic
The memoirs author and son Daniel is a creative Classics Professor
who feels closer to his mother and constrained by his silent, mathematical father Jay.
Yet when father and son embark on both an academic and actual classical voyage, they deepen
their kinship. This memoir has so many layers, we won’t be skimming to the end. Instead,
Mendelsohn focuses on Homer’s Odyssey and Iliad to show us how Greek epic journeys lasting
decades once inspired men and women to restore revered values in their world. And in between
these classical deep dives, Daniel Mendelsohn revives unforgettable memories and parallels
showing how the personal voyage with his elderly father turned into a family epic.
