Since 1874, Chautauqua Institution is a summer program held in upstate NY where adults can focus on a week of arts, educational, religious and musical learning events. Due to its huge popularity, the Maryland Humanities Council has brought an abbreviated version to Maryland for 24 consecutive years. This summer the theme is “Seeking Justice” and offers 3 consecutive evenings by bringing historical activists to life on the Chautauqua stage here in Maryland.

  • Frederick Douglass, Maryland abolitionist, writer and orator will be portrayed by Bill Grimmette, a living history interpreter, actor and story teller who will celebrate the bicentennial year of Douglass’ birth on Friday, July 13. (Program 1)
  • Eleanor Roosevelt, humanitarian, longest serving First Lady, and advocate for justice will be portrayed by Susan Marie Frontczak, storyteller and living history presenter on Saturday, July 14. (Program 2)
  • The Baltimore civil rights activist Thurgood Marshall, broke barriers as the lead attorney in Brown v. Board of Education and as the first African-American Supreme Court Justice. Brian Anthony Wilson, a film and TV actor will perform a scene from the play Thurgood followed by a dialogue with scholar Lenneal Henderson on Sunday, July 15. (Program 3)
